How to plan a magazine

Turn the brief for a magazine into a clear audience, content order, page structure and review route before styling begins.

Practical publishing guidance based on Megal Publisher’s documented page, text, image, table, review and output tools.

Practical workflow

Work through the publication in a fixed order

Separate content, structure and proofing decisions so a late correction does not undo earlier work.

Start with a decision, not decoration

A useful magazine brief names the reader, the decision or action the page should support, and the evidence required before design begins. For this project the audience is readers moving between feature stories, short departments and visual material. The working objective is to create a varied issue that still has dependable navigation and editorial hierarchy. Write those two statements at the top of the brief and test every proposed section against them. Material that does not help the reader understand, trust or act should be removed, shortened or placed in a secondary channel.

Plan the reading sequence

A multi-page, facing-page publication with recurring departments and flexible feature layouts. A reliable first outline is cover and issue identity, contents and front matter, feature stories, recurring departments and credits, contacts and next issue. That order is a starting point rather than a decorative template: change it only when the reader’s real task demands a different sequence. Mark which information is mandatory, which is supporting context and which can be left out if space becomes tight. This prevents late copy from forcing random reductions in type size.

Translate the brief into page objects

Build a page architecture with masters and recurring modules, then let feature openings vary within that system. In Megal Publisher, rough out the publication with separate text boxes, image frames, shapes and tables before polishing colours or effects. Use guides and alignment to establish the underlying grid. If the publication has repeated pages, headers or furniture, plan those repeated parts before duplicating content. Keep wording in live text so it remains editable and reviewable.

Agree the review route

Name one owner for factual approval and another person, where possible, for the final proof. Issue date, contents references, bylines, image credits, page numbers and contributor details need editorial checking.. Record the intended output—screen PDF, office print or commercial print—because page size, image quality, bleed and proofing needs depend on it. The common planning failure is using visual variety without a stable type and navigation system, leaving readers unsure where one story ends; a written brief makes that trade-off visible before production time is spent.

A short working checklist

Planning checklist

  1. Write the audience in one sentence: readers moving between feature stories, short departments and visual material.
  2. Define the outcome: create a varied issue that still has dependable navigation and editorial hierarchy.
  3. Gather and approve cover and issue identity, contents and front matter, feature stories, recurring departments and credits, contacts and next issue.
  4. Choose the final page size and output route before detailed layout.
  5. Assign factual, accessibility and final-proof owners.
  6. Keep the original source material with the editable .mpub project.
Keep the source and proof together. Megal Publisher can keep the page objects editable in an .mpub project. Preserve the source facts and the approved output as separate records so later changes can be checked.
