You do not need Microsoft Publisher or LibreOffice installed. Use a current desktop browser and start with a copy of the file you want to bring into Megal Publisher.

Choose the PUB option
On the welcome screen, select “Open Microsoft Publisher file .pub”.

Select your file
Choose a file ending in .pub. Megal's own importer reads its supported Publisher structures and begins rebuilding the editable publication.

Review every page
Check fonts, text flow, images, tables and object positions. Correct anything that changed during conversion.

Save an editable copy
Save the working publication as an .mpub file so future edits stay in Megal Publisher.
What is inside a PUB file?
A PUB file is more than a page image
Microsoft Publisher documents can contain positioned text frames, linked stories, pictures, tables, shapes, grouped objects, page settings and font information. That is why simply renaming the file or opening it in a generic text editor does not work.
Megal Publisher does not run Microsoft Publisher or LibreOffice behind the scenes, and it does not first turn the publication into a PDF page image. Its own PUB import engine reads supported structures from the original file and rebuilds text, images and layout elements as editable page objects.

This is more useful than a viewer or static conversion when you need to change a telephone number, update an event date, replace a photo, rewrite a newsletter or repurpose an old brochure.
Conversion is a starting point, not a print guarantee.
Publisher is a proprietary format. Missing fonts, legacy WordArt, unusual effects and complex grouped content may need attention after import. Compare important files with the original Publisher rendering or a trusted printout.
What can you do after opening the file?

Why not stop at a static conversion?
A static file can preserve the appearance of a finished page, but it does not give you a useful replacement for Publisher. It cannot become next month’s newsletter, accept a new price, replace a photo or update an event date.
Import the original .pub file into Megal Publisher instead. Review the layout, make any corrections and save an editable .mpub master so the publication remains useful after Publisher ends.
How to get the cleanest conversion
- Work from a duplicate and never overwrite your only original.
- If possible, note which fonts the publication uses before migrating.
- Keep linked images and other project assets with the document.
- Check overset text, line endings and text that wraps around images.
- Compare page dimensions, margins, folds and bleed settings.
- Proof the final export at 100% and print a test copy when output matters.

What program opens a .pub file?
Microsoft Publisher is the original application. Megal Publisher offers a browser-based import and editing route when you do not have Publisher installed.
Can Google Docs or Microsoft Word open a PUB file?
They are not designed as native PUB editors. Open the file in Megal Publisher to import the page layout into an editable publication made for ongoing use.
Can I open a PUB file on a Mac?
Yes. Megal Publisher works in a modern browser on macOS. Import the .pub file, review the converted pages and save the project in Megal’s editable format.
Do I need to convert the PUB file to PDF first?
No. Megal's own import engine reads supported structures directly from the original .pub file. It does not require Microsoft Publisher, LibreOffice or a PDF-first conversion. Review the result and save a new .mpub master that you can continue updating.
How does Megal Publisher make the file editable?
The Megal PUB import engine rebuilds supported text, images and layout elements as separate Megal objects. Missing fonts, legacy effects and unsupported proprietary features can still require correction after import.
Why did a font or object move?
The original font may not be available in the browser, or the Publisher feature may not have a direct web equivalent. Substitute the font or adjust the converted object, then proof the document again.
